Review: RENT brings love to Stevens Point

When RENT closed on Broadway on June 1, 2008, people from all around the world mourned the fact that this memorable, loving, and inspiring musical was coming to an end. Though the musical closed on Broadway, it will never close in each of our hearts. Spreading the love and living each day as it is the last is the common theme that underlies this production – and that is exactly how the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Theatre Department portrayed it this opening weekend. With each step of the performance the cast exuded love. Love clung onto you so tight that you couldn’t let go or escape that feeling that you are a part of something, that you are worth something in the world, and that you should open your heart and see what is in front of you.

Care packages for soldiers reaches out to student soldiers

There is a long line of people who know a specific person, who knows that person, who knows another person. This extended line of never ending people grows exponentially until you hear people saying that it truly is “a small world after all.” Knowing people throughout the community, the city and out to the world demonstrates that people are all connected and instill a sense of togetherness. Many people have relations in the military, or know of someone who is involved with the soldiers who are overseas. The activity, Care Packages for Soldiers, shows that people on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus can get together and share moments in which they are all connected to each other.

As I approached the parking lot behind the Collins Classroom Center, my stomach clenched with anxiety. I was heading toward a group of about 40 zombies, pale-faced and bloody, getting ready to take over the streets of Stevens Point this Halloween. Under the golden glow of the streetlights, I saw them there, standing quietly, smoking, awaiting the bugle call. Some of them practiced the only line a zombie has ever screeched, “BRRRAAAAINNNS.”

Review: “Paranormal Activity” just in time for Halloween

In an exhausted horror movie market where blood and gore have taken over for old fashion suspense, “Paranormal Activity,” stands alone as the most frightening movie I’ve seen in years.  Its not the “I have to look away because this is so gruesome,” type of horror our generation has grown up on. The movie wins no points for shock value. With minimalist tactics, writer and director Oren Peli brings out the fear that is already inside us, scene by scene, with a hand held camera.

Review: “The Road”

“The Road,” set to open in theaters Nov. 25, is one of the most anticipated films of the season and is sure to shock audiences if it utilizes even the slightest bit of imagery that Cormac McCarthy so chillingly sets in his novel. From the opening finger-snaps of Washed Out’s “Life of leisure” EP, the agenda is clear - get as many people to groove together as possible. Across six distinct electronic dance tracks, Washed Out proves that he is a confident auteur. Surprisingly enough, this debut release is the result of only a month of work using the moniker Washed Out. The EP was recorded in a bedroom (the hallmark of do-it-yourself and independent music), though the audio quality does not suffer because of it.
