Not everyone who is graduating came to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for academic reasons.

Ryan Stieber, after applying to UW-SP and elsewhere, chose UW-SP because of a girlfriend. Though they broke up before fall semester his freshman year, he has not regretted coming to Stevens Point.

Stieber has attended UW-SP for four-and-a-half years, majoring in computer information systems and web and digital media development.

After graduation, he will go to the Rice Lake area and work for a hometown computer shop.

During his time at Point, Stieber has accomplished a lot. Some of his accomplishments include receiving the Chancellor’s Leadership Award, the University Leadership Award and being a member and vice president of the National Residence Hall Honorary.

Stieber was also on staff in the residence halls for three-and-a-half years, including being an sssistant to the director.

This year, he was chosen as speaker at graduation. Stieber said “actually graduating” is an accomplishment in itself.

As far as his speech goes, Stieber could only describe it as being about success and opportunities. He said, “We’re all successful, and grab the opportunities when they come by.”

His other advice to students would be to respect everyone and their beliefs. To the graduates, he said, “We’re all successful for graduating.”

Though he is nervous to give the speech at graduation, Stieber is happy to be doing so.

When asked to describe himself in five words so people could better know their graduation speaker, Stieber said, “fun, caring, approachable, sarcastic and a teddy bear.”
