Every year, the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point hires hundreds of students to run its various offices, food service venues and other businesses.

The UW-SP Student Involvement and Employment Office commends those individuals that exemplify student employment by giving them The Student Employer and Employee of the Year Awards. Individuals are nominated by their employees or supervisors to receive the award.

The award is based on reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of contribution.

This year’s Student Employee of the Year is Deanna Deising. She is the student manager of the Basement Brewhaus, a popular coffee shop on campus where students and faculty go to relax, study and enjoy a beverage.

Deising’s supervisor, Greg Diekroeger, nominated her for the award. He wrote, “The Brewhaus would basically not have opened back in January 2008 when we re-opened the DUC. Because of her background, follow-through and willingness to do whatever it takes to get things done, the Brewhaus had a successful opening for second semester. She even slept overnight in the Brewhaus one night to make sure we didn’t miss our first order of milk prior to opening! The level of accountability and reliability displayed by Deanna is exemplary. She truly is a para-professional in her job that just happens to have the word ‘student’ in front of the title, manager.”

SIEO also awards the Student Employer of the Year. Dr. Andy Felt was nominated by Eric Pehl and Nathan Pollesch, two employees that work for him in the Center for Athletic Scheduling.

“Professor Felt should be strongly considered for the Student Employer of the Year award because of his outstanding ability and willingness to work with the students employed at the Center for Athletic Scheduling,” said Pehl. “His strong work ethic is very apparent and it rubs off on me and makes me want to do a good job for the CAS.”

“Dr. Felt creates an atmosphere that is nurturing, positive and adaptive. We only have four employees in the Center for Athletic Scheduling and that means sometimes he ends up doing the work that we may not be able to get to,” said Pollesch. “He is always willing to take the time to teach us, help us get our work completed and is always positive about it.”

SIEO also awards an off-campus Student Employer of the Year. This year’s winner was Pam Fochs, principal of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Elementary School.

“She is just such a great example of an outstanding educator,” said UW-SP student Cheryl Lang. “I want to thank her every day for allowing me the chance to learn and grow under her tutelage while I earn my elementary education and learning disabilities degree.”
