Geeks' corner: What is PointCon

Dear Guru,

What is this “PointCon?” I have been hearing rumors about all over campus? When is PointCon? Where is PointCon? Who can go to PointCon and who should go to PointCon? Why do so many students find a fun weekend at PointCon?

Thanks for the answers,

Ian

Dear Ian,

Thank you for your questions. I will answer your questions as best I can. First, ‘What is PointCon?’ is a simple question. PointCon is a local gaming convention held every year by the members of GASP. GASP is a student organization and stands for Gamers’ Alliance of Stevens Point. It is good to hear rumors, but better to ask questions about those rumors to get to the bottom of things.

PointCon is slated to start at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1. It runs until 11 p.m. Friday night and starts again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, ending at 10 p.m. Saturday evening. Again starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 3rd, ending Sunday evening at 5 p.m. It is a whole weekend of gaming geared toward all people interested in having some fun and looking for something to do. I know admission is $5 for the whole weekend.

PointCon is to be held this year in the Dreyfus University Center. The main room will be the Laird Room with other rooms running certain games. The Laird Room is going to be free to enter, but in order to participate in any of the tournaments and win the prizes, you will have to pay the $5 entrance fee.

Everyone can go to PointCon and everyone should go to PointCon. Let me explain. Everyone can go to PointCon because it is open to the general public and to the student body in general.

Everyone should go to PointCon. The explanation for this is quite simple. If you have gone to a previous PointCon (this is the 18th annual) you know how fun it is and will want to go this year’s PointCon as well. If you haven’t gone to a previous PointCon, you should go this year and see what it’s all about, meet some new people and learn some new words. I have always found it fascinating the different word usages that take place and it’s a great way to learn how to use different words and learn some new definitions of some common words like “strength” and “constitution”.

I know a lot of people have fun at PointCon, but the reasons vary to some extent. In order to find out why so many students have fun at PointCon, you should go and see for yourself.

Just remember to have fun, respect the space of others and meet some interesting people, some of them you just might know.

Just remember to game safe,

The Guru
