Living sustainably has become a rapid trend among today’s society. As students, we have heard of many different ways to become a “greener” person. We hear of things such as changing our light bulbs, buying locally grown foods, turning down our heat and using reusable grocery bags. Although it is suggested we do all of these things, there is an easy way to start that is also free and can even save you money.

Sustainable transportation has come a long way in the past couple years. Hybrid cars have become a much-advertised way to not only save money on gas, but help the environment. But for many of us, being college students, we cannot afford to buy a new car, nonetheless a pricey hybrid. There are, however, many easy things you can do to make your car a bit more sustainable. Driving below 60 mph, car pooling, using cruise control and taking unnecessary items out of your car to lighten the weight can make an impact.

When it comes to sustainable transportation, however, the best and easiest way to start is by leaving your car at home. Walking and riding your bike to school, work and other events is not only great for the environment, but also for you and your health.
