A recycled art contest will be held on the north side of the Noel Fine Arts Center from April 20 through April 24 in conjunction with Earth Week and the previous RecyleMania competition.

The art contest is open to any University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point student, with the possibility of winning one of the three cash prizes and the artwork displayed in the Dreyfus University Center.

RecycleMania was a nationwide tournament with 512 universities registered. Competition began in January and ended on March 28. The UW-SP competition was held in residence halls across campus and was initiated last year.

“We’re going to be doing this year after year now,” said Nate Pollesch, competition organizer and Student Government Association sustainability issues director.

The purpose was to have a battle to demonstrate who could recycle the most waste.

“Our total recycling was 154,000 pounds,” said Scott Asbach, Residence Hall Association president. “The biggest thing we have to remember is we’re already a recycling campus and we’re very big in terms of sustainability.”

Although the final weight results may seem like a large number, the RecycleMania competition could have been more successful said Pollesch.

The committee hopes to develop more objectives for future competitions and to incorporate a broader base among the UW-SP campus.

The recycled art contest was created to show that the dumpster needn’t be the final resting place for waste. It also gives students the opportunity to creatively express themselves through their art.

Students will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite piece and the winner will have their piece purchased by the University Centers for $100.

“Because RecyleMania is a campus-wide effort, one of the biggest things I’ve been trying to do is get lots of different people involved from all over campus,” Pollesch said.

Winners of the contest will be announced during the Eco-Fair on April 24.
