UW-SP outdoor track and field squad tastes success early in spring season

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point outdoor track and field teams have started off the 2009 season with a bang, already posting several top three individual finishes in the Pointers’ first outing at the Washington University Mini Meet in St. Louis. The men’s team ended with 141 points for first and the women’s team finished in sixth.

On the men’s team, Keith Kismuke took third in the men’s long jump. Timothy Thornburg finished first and Jason Lisower, second, in the 3,000- meter steeplechase. Patrick Leonard, Brad Koback and Zach Scott-Keyser were first, second and third in the men’s 400-meter dash in times of 49.05, 50.25 and 50.47. Adam Lang was the top UW-SP finisher in the 800-meter run, taking second with a time of 1:55.30. Ernest Edmond took first in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 22.30 and the UW-SP men’s 4x400 relay team ended second.

For the women, Allison Wolter was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:41.21. Kelly Haen took fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:33.29.

In the second outing, the throwers of the UW-SP men’s and women’s teams found their way to the UW-Oshkosh Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Invitational. Kyle Schofield dominated for a first place finish in the men’s shot put with a toss of 15.8 meters in the finals. In the men’s hammer throw, three Pointers tallied team points, as Jerry Prusinski finished second with a throw of 52.03 meters in the finals. Michael Schlichting and Scofield also placed in the points for Stevens Point, tossing 47.79 and 46.96 meters respectively, finishing fifth and sixth.

In the women’s shot put, Tahlia Luedtke and Amy Kryzkowski finished fifteenth and twenty-third respectively with throws of 11.02 and 7.96 meters. Stephanie Fosterling finished seventeenth in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 36.47 meters and Luedtke placed seventeenth in the women’s javelin.

The third outing of the year for the Pointer track and field teams was also a large success with the men placing second with 206 team points and the women placing third with 143 team points.

For the men, Noah Utecht was the top finisher for the Pointers in the javelin throw, with a toss of 53.62 meters. Cody White took home the men’s triple jump top finish with a jump of 13.23 meters. Mark Cufaude was the top finisher in the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.73 meters. In the men’s 5,000 meter run, Corey Towle, Dominick Meyer and Phil Richert finished one through three in the event. Cory Towle, a Subway Athlete of the Week, finished with a time of 14:44.56. Derek Stone finished first in the men’s high jump, clearing 1.93 meters. Jake Koss took third in the event, clearing 1.88 meters and Mike Dellemann was first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.01. Keith Ingram finished in the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.91. Nick Ver Duin, Ernest Edmond and Patrick Leonard placed second through fourth. In the men’s long jump, Keith Dismuske finished second with a jump of 6.53 meters.

Top finishes for the Pointers included a 1-4 sweep of the 5000-meter run, as Allison Wolter led a group of four Pointers, finishing with a time of 18:36.45. Sara Kline competed for the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 15:00. Elizabeth Caine also took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.63 and also posted first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.95. In the longer events, Claire Roberts and Kelly Haen finished second and third in the 1500-meter run with times of 4:52.00 and 4:53.26 respectively. Kathleen Folbrecht, Laura Simonis and Kristin Kuber were second through fourth in the 400-meter dash.

“We are preparing to win the conference. Indoors we lost by six points, which is nothing, so we think we have a good chance,” said senior Mike Dellemann.
