An early primer for Thanksgiving day sports

Thanksgiving is almost here.  Just reading that sentence to myself makes me long for the point on Thursday night when I literally cannot move because I have eaten too much.  If this sounds like a bad thing, it’s not; paralysis by food is one of my favorite ailments out there, and Thanksgiving is the day to test my stomach’s limits.  The other contributing factor to a full day on the couch is the multitude of sporting events that will occupy my time, until I pass out, of course.  Here they are, ranked from most watchable to I’m-only-watching-because it’s-Thanksgiving.

Sports fans, when times get tough, have a little faith

Let me put this out there so that we may all take a breath and get over it: I am a Chicago Bears fan.  Before immediately turning the page, allow me to mention that this article does not illustrate how my team is better than your team. I am not that foolish. Having heard, “I can find a new copy editor” and “I can make you a pretty drink with antifreeze” from Packer fan friends, I hardly wish to receive threats from acquaintances or, heaven forbid, absolute strangers. Occasionally sacrifices must be made to support the common good. Monday, Oct. 5, was one such instance. For that night, I became a Packer supporter.

Fun with numbers through week two

The biggest reason I went down the Bachelor of Arts route was to ensure that I took the bare minimum of math classes needed to graduate, while remaining under the guise that I can successfully perform a long division problem (very questionable). Despite my deficiencies, I took an interest in advanced sports statistics, mainly in relation to the NBA and MLB. While there is no substitute for actually watching a game to understand the ebbs and flows of a player or team, advanced statistics can provide insight as to why certain things are happening in the sports world. I had never looked for these types of statistics in relation to the NFL, but starting this season I have decided to confuse myself even more by attempting to decipher the work of the Web site www.footballoutsiders.com, which features some in-depth stats based on the early results of the NFL season.

The night I made a fool of myself in front of Charles Woodson

Unlike some other cities that are home to professional sports teams, Green Bay is not usually described as a booming metropolis.  Because of this, options for a night on the town are somewhat limited, and at some point every Friday or Saturday night, all roads lead to downtown Green Bay.  This is both good and bad (probably more bad side, for my wallet at least), but the one unique element to going out in Green Bay is the chance of spotting a member of the only real local celebrities, Green Bay Packer players.  Making this more interesting is that downtown Green Bay has no VIP sections, no forbidden rooms upstairs where players can escape overly-talkative fans; instead, they sit on the same stools as everyone else, but probably with more expensive drinks.
