Intramurals: rewarding experience
Sports Reporter
With winter finally behind us, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. What better way to do that than getting involved in intramurals. But the chance to run in the sun isn’t the only reason students should participate in intramurals. Students like Reed Dahms play for the social aspect.
“Being on the same team as a lot of your friends is a lot of fun,” Dahms said. “I also enjoy the fact that it gives everyone on campus the opportunity to play a sport competitively.”
Lee Follen agrees with Dahms.
“There are many benefits for participating in intramurals,” Follen said. “The first is that you get out and meet a lot of new people. And the second being that you can get your exercise that you may not otherwise get.”
Follen, who played basketball at UW-Platteville, also loves the opportunity to compete at a high level.
But you don’t have to play in the games to be involved and stay active. Officials still get their fair share of exercise.
“The best part of officiating games is staying active,” intramural referee Casey Pivonka said. “Not many people realize it, but officials in most sports get a great workout.”
Pivonka, who played basketball at UW-Manitowoc, also enjoys the opportunity to keep involved with sports and the environment.
“First and foremost it keeps students in some kind of athletic and healthy shape,” Pivonka said. “And by being active and letting your mind off of your school work, it actually helps you do better with your academics.”
So even though the school year is almost over, intramurals are a great way to expand your base of friends on campus, divert your attention from school for a while and to keep the “Freshman 15” off your body.
